Andrea Cooper is an international media artist with a Masters in Visual Studies from the University of Toronto. Her most recent work Honey will premier at the Berlin International Film Festival's Forum Expanded in February 2010. Strange Things premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival's Forum Expanded in 2007 and showed at Extra City in Antwerp, Belgium in 2008. Cooper won the National Film Board of Canada's Emerging Filmmaker/Video artist award at the Images Festival in 2007. Cooper's work has been exhibited in galleries across Canada, most recently she had a solo exhibition Fickle As Poison at Grunt Gallery in Vancouver. Her work is distributed by V-Tape in Toronto.
I interviewed Andrea Cooper for the fifth episode of the "Artists Interviews" podcast series in 2006.
Originally from St. John's, Andrea's video work transforms literary narratives into sophisticated metaphors considering the contemporary contexts of gender, identity and psychological locations. "Oh Darlin'" is a 2006 video work based on the true story of Marguerite de la Rocqueâs survival after banishment to an uninhabited island off the coast of Labrador. In 13 sequences, Cooper reconstructs the character of Marguerite through potent monologues exploring themes of madness, desire and isolation.
This interview was recorded on Tuesday May 9th 2006 - just prior to Andrea's departure to a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Podcast editing was completed on Monday July 17, 2006. Past Artist Interview are available at:
